AI agents module · Run Codex on your server

OpenAI’s Codex on your server

A workspace on your server, from the AI agents module: its own user, SSH, a persistent tmux session and OpenAI’s Codex CLI, launched with the codex command. The agent runs on your OpenAI key.

01 — features

Codex on BeAdmin, set up by the panel

Package, key, version and sandbox all sit with the panel.

01

Official npm package

Codex is installed from OpenAI’s official npm package. If the server has no Node.js 22, the panel installs it for you.

02

Sandbox is a must

Running without isolation is forbidden by the panel’s policy, and the client cannot lift it.

03

The key travels only by socket

The OpenAI key is set in the panel — shared across the server or per workspace. It is neither on disk nor in the agent’s environment: the panel hands it over through a local socket.

04

Updates by button

Codex doesn’t update itself: the panel installs a new version when you press the button.

05

Launch: the codex command

Type codex in your workspace and the agent opens inside a tmux session that keeps running through dropouts and a shut laptop.

06

Next to Claude Code and Grok Build

Codex, Claude Code and Grok Build can sit on the same server and work in the same tmux session. Removing one doesn’t break sessions or touch the others.

02 — connect

Codex in four steps

From a bare server to your first task for Codex.

1

Set up BeAdmin

BeAdmin goes onto the server per the guide; you configure the module and workspaces inside the panel.

2

Pick Codex in the module

Install the module, choose AI provider Codex: the panel pulls the official npm package, plus Node.js 22 if missing.

3

A new workspace

Attach an SSH key and an OpenAI API key to it; the latter can be shared across the whole server.

4

SSH in and type codex

The panel gives you the connection string ready to go: run it in a terminal, land in a tmux session, then type codex.

03 — use cases

What you can do with an agent on a server

From a solo developer to a team: everyone gets a workspace of their own.

From any device

The agent session lives on the server, not on your computer: connect from any device that has an SSH client and your key.

Long-running tasks

Hand the agent a big task and close the laptop: the tmux session keeps running on the server, and you can come back any time.

Teams

A separate workspace for each developer: their own user, their own SSH keys and their own session.

A server in another country

If your AI provider is unavailable in your country, set up the agent on a BeAdmin server where it is available and work with it remotely over SSH.

04 — pricing

Estimate the cost of your workspaces

The price depends on the number of workspaces and AI providers. The longer the billing period, the bigger the discount.

3

From 1 to 100 per server. The first workspace is free.

AI providers per server

From one to three AI providers: Claude Code, Codex and Grok Build.

The more workspaces you have, the cheaper each additional one gets.

Without a licence you get one workspace and one AI provider. More workspaces and providers need a licence.

The price covers workspaces and AI providers. The API key is your own: we don’t sell tokens.

Frequently asked questions

Codex on BeAdmin: subscription, key, updates, sandbox, server and price.

No. Codex runs only on an OpenAI API key, and signing in with a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription is shut off on purpose.

You need an OpenAI API key, issued at platform.openai.com/api-keys. In the panel it can be shared across the server or personal to a workspace. Details are in the article “Provider API keys”.

No, it doesn’t update itself: the panel manages the version, and you install a newer one with a button. Details are in the article “Managing the module”.

No. A workspace user has no access to the sites on this server, and Codex itself runs only in a sandbox — running without isolation is forbidden by the panel’s policy.

Yes, all three can sit on the same server and work in the same tmux session; the first AI provider is free, each further one needs a licence. Removing one doesn’t break sessions or touch the others.

An ordinary VPS or dedicated server running Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, 24.04, 26.04 or Debian 12, 13 with at least 4 GB of RAM will do. Codex needs Node.js 22: if the server has none, the panel installs it; if an older version is installed, the panel leaves it alone and rejects the Codex installation.

One workspace and one AI provider — Codex, Claude Code or Grok Build — are free. Each further provider and extra workspaces need a licence; the calculator above shows the price. We don’t sell tokens.

Put Codex to work on your server

Set up BeAdmin, add Codex and SSH in. One workspace and one AI provider come without a licence.
